Preventative Health: Key to Longevity

Cats are masters of disguise. In the wild, showing pain makes you a target, so cats have evolved to hide illness until it is critical. This makes preventative healthcare absolutely essential. You cannot wait for your cat to “tell” you they are sick.

The “Big Three” Feline Killers

  1. Kidney Disease (CKD): Affects over 30% of older cats. Symptoms include increased thirst and weight loss. Early detection via blood work can extend life by years.
  2. Hyperthyroidism: A tumor on the thyroid gland causes metabolism to race. Cats eat ravenously but lose weight. It is treatable with medication or iodine therapy.
  3. Diabetes: Often linked to obesity and high-carb dry food diets. It requires daily insulin injections but can essentially be “cured” (go into remission) with diet change alone in some cases.

Dental Health

85% of cats have periodontal disease by age 3. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and damage the heart and kidneys. Checking your cat’s teeth for red gums (gingivitis) and scheduling professional cleanings is vital.

Vaccinations & Parasites

Even indoor cats need core vaccines (Rabies, FVRCP). Insects can enter homes carrying heartworm or tapeworm. A regular flea/tick preventative plan is recommended, especially in warmer climates.
